A Link for Summer Reading

This is a good link for children looking for summer reading material. You may want your child to look at lists a year or two ahead of their current grade. Remember that summer reading should be easy enough to read without parent assistance for the most part.

Second Period Enrichment is Busy

We are continuing our exploration of narrative poetry with "Casey at the Bat". We are going to learn the vocabulary and how descriptive words create pictures in the mind. We will continue our work on compare and contrast and paraphrasing. We are also learning something about the game of baseball in this country.

The second grade will continue to work in Vocabulary Workshop and the third grade will continue to have spelling tests although they are slightly off schedule with all the schedule changes in the past weeks. The next spelling test for both groups is Wednesday, May 16.

***Please note that if your child is a real sports fan, you may want to check out the following website for the Sports Legend and Babe Ruth Museums in Baltimore. The Sports Legend Museum has a great display on Baltimore baseball history in the major, minor and Negro leagues.

What's New in Enrichment Today- First Period Group

We have been learning about exaggeration by reading American Tall Tales. We have heard about the exploits of Paul Bunyan and his blue ox, Babe. We learned that Johnny Appleseed was a real person, but many tales are written that could not be true. We heard about Pecos Bill and his wife, Slue-foot Sue and their adventures in Texas.  We will continue our adventure next week with John Henry, Mike Fink and Casey Jones.
We will be working in Unit 11 in Vocabulary Workshop next week and will try to complete Unit 12 before the end of the year.

Please note that all homework has been suspended for this group for the rest of the year. They will do all assignment in class.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Testing Week and Beyond

Hi Everyone,
I have not posted for the last few weeks and wanted to get everyone up to date on what we are doing in the enrichment groups.

First Period has been working on poetry. We spent some time on rhyming words and on how to write poetry. We also read and listened to poems of many different types. The group liked silly poems especially limericks.  We will begin a new novel after testing. In vocabulary we are starting Unit 10 next week. The introductory story is a familiar fairy tale. We will test on these words just before the Easter Break.

Second Period has finished reading the story the Mouse and the Motorcycle.  We will be doing wrap up activities for the next week after testing. We will begin our new story after Easter break.  Spelling will begin again next week with words from skills vocabulary.

This week I will meet with the second period group as time permits.
